Abstract

The study utilized the descriptive, non-experimental, survey method. The respondents were all fourth year students who were officially enrolled during second semester of SY 2006-2007 composed of 290 students chosen using purposive sampling technique. A self-made questionnaire on the level of English language competence was used as the research instrument. Data was analyzed through percentage, mean, t-test of independent means and f-test. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents were female, Tagalog, spoke Filipino at home, studied in private schools, and resided in urban area; 2) The analysis of the perception on English language competency of BSN Batch 2007 students in listening, reading, writing and speaking had an overall average of good; 3)There were no significant differences in the perception on English language competency when grouped according to gender, type of previous school and ethnic affiliation. There was a significant difference in terms of place of residence and language spoken home.
