Abstract

This study aims to understand and describe the experiences of nurses who are classified as Advanced Beginners with no more than two years of experience, and are currently working in OB/maternal wards, labor/delivery rooms, or recovery rooms in hospitals located in Dasmariñas, Cavite. A qualitative descriptive design was utilized to obtain an in-depth understanding of advanced beginner nurses’ experiences in maternal care. A purposive sampling strategy was used to select ten (10) nurses with less than two years of experience working in maternal care including current employment in the delivery room (DR) or obstetric (OB) ward in various hospitals in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Semi structured interviews were conducted to explore their perceptions of preparedness, self-evaluation of competencies, and challenges they face. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and the data collected were coded thematically to identify patterns and prominent themes. Ethical considerations including informed consent were strictly maintained, with the participants made aware of the purpose of the study, voluntary participation, and confidentiality. After analyzing the data, the study’s participants had their thoughts centered on their experiences in maternal care, transitioning from student nurses to professional nurses, as well as their challenges, learnings, and the support and encouragement they received from themselves and others. The participants' experiences were categorized into four major themes: "Dynamic Nature of Maternal Care," "Processes to Provide Maternal Care," "Skill Acquisition Through Clinical Exposure and Training," and "Challenges in Maternal Care Management," which were further divided into fifteen subthemes, providing comprehensive insights into their professional journeys.
