Abstract
Background: Global aging has led to an increasing number of older persons in elderly institutions, affecting their quality of life (QoL). This study explored the QoL of institutionalized older persons, examining their physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being and determining the convergence or divergence between quantitative and qualitative findings. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed method study was conducted to assess the quality of life of the respondents. The quantitative data were collected using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire, while the qualitative data were obtained through a key informant interview. Results: The majority of the respondents were classified as 65-74, female, with the number of years in the elderly institutions between 1 to 5 years. The most significant findings for the overall quality of life in terms of the physical, psychological, and social relationship domains were at the moderate level, and a high level in the environment domain. The following themes emerged as the participants shared their experiences of living in the elderly institutions: “routinary tasks,” “dealing with life’s challenges,” “nurturing environment,” “developing interconnected relationships,” and “introspection and spirituality.” The quantitative and qualitative data had moderate convergence in terms of the physical health, psychological health, and social relationship domains, whereas the environment domain was highly convergent. Conclusions: The study suggested that the older persons experienced a moderate to high quality of life. Thus, the majority of the older persons found satisfaction and contentment with regard to their health and well-being as they resided in the elderly institutions. To further enhance the overall quality of life of older persons, caregivers may also promote daily movement and emotional connection for effective engagement.
