Abstract
Emotional intelligence (EI) plays a vital role in nursing by influencing communication, stress management, and patient care. Effective nurse-client interaction (NCI) fosters trust and improves health outcomes. This study aimed to assess the EI competency level and NCI skills of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) nursing students and explore the relationship between the two. A quantitative correlational design was used to examine the relationship between EI and NCI competency among second- to fourth-year nursing students. Stratified random sampling was employed, and self-made questionnaires were utilized to measure EI and NCI. The EI questionnaire assessed four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. It consisted of 20 items rated on a 4-point Likert scale (4 = always, 3 = often, 2 = seldom, 1 = never). The NCI questionnaire was based on Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory, encompassing four phases: orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests and Pearson’s correlation. Most respondents were female, Catholic, and in their second year of study. Participants had a moderate-high level of EI (M=3.33) and NCI (M=3.45) competency. Among the NCI phases, identification showed the highest competency, while exploitation and resolution exhibited moderate levels. A significant positive correlation (r = .654, p = < .001) was observed between EI and NCI competency. The study highlights the importance of EI in enhancing nurse-client communication. Integrating EI training in nursing curricula may improve students’ communication skills, empathy, and patient engagement. Future research should explore targeted interventions for strengthening EI and NCI in nursing education.
