Abstract
This study explored the level of knowledge of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers regarding the prevention and control of Monkeypox, aiming to assess their health literacy concerning this emerging disease. A descriptive quantitative research design was utilized to analyze the knowledge of 177 PUV drivers, particularly tricycle drivers, from the selected Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association (TODA) about the prevention and control of Monkeypox. A 20-item questionnaire, guided by Nutbeam’s Health Literacy Model, was used and underwent pilot testing for face and content validity. Pen-and-paper questionnaires were administered to accommodate the respondents’ needs, and ethical principles were strictly adhered to throughout the study. The Kruskal-Wallis H test and Bloom’s cutoff categories of knowledge were used to interpret the study’s statistical findings. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents (59.3%) were aged 40–64 years and had reached high school education (63.3%). The respondents’ overall score (86.59%) indicated a high level of knowledge regarding the prevention and control of Monkeypox. There were no significant differences in knowledge scores when grouped according to age (p = .987) and educational attainment (p = .123), based on a .05 significance level. The PUV drivers demonstrated high knowledge regarding the prevention and control of Monkeypox and showed particular attention to seeking medical consultation, reporting symptoms, and vaccination. However, gaps remain in understanding disease transmission to people and animals, as well as in verifying the reliability of information from social media. Therefore, the dissemination of health-informative materials, reinforcement of hygiene practices, resource allocation, and enforcement of hygiene policies are recommended.
