Abstract
This study explores the perception of older persons on the aging process among aged individuals. It seeks to understand how older persons view different aspects of their aging, how they live, and experience their day-to-day lives. A quantitative descriptive design was used to analyze and describe the views of the older persons as seen through three domains, namely: spirituality, intrapsychic factors, and functional mechanisms. Data collection was done via purposive sampling, wherein the respondents were asked to take a self-made pre-qualification test, which, if they had passed with a score of 7 out of 10, would proceed with the 15-item self-made questionnaire. Ethical principles were strictly adhered to throughout all stages of the study. The findings revealed that the demographic of the respondents was mostly composed of older persons between the ages 60 to 65 (58 or 32.25%), female (122 or 67.8%), were able to obtain a high school education (76 or 42.2%), lives in an extended family (118 or 65.6%), and were without comorbidities (101 or 56.1%). The results also show that older persons perceived their aging as highly positive in terms of spirituality (M=3.72), while both intrapsychic factors (M=3.09) and functional mechanisms (M=2.77) were viewed as positive. The study also found no significant differences in the perception of older persons on the aging process when grouped according to age (F =2.106, p =.067), sex (t=1.120, p=0.264), educational attainment (F=1.739, p=0.143), family type (F=0.494, p=0.780), and medical condition (t=0.084, p=0.933) thus, the null hypothesis was not rejected. Most respondents were aged 60-65, predominantly female, had completed high school, lived in extended families, and reported good overall health. They generally held positive views on aging, influenced by spirituality, functional ability, and emotional resilience, though some expressed concern about declining physical capabilities. The study found no significant differences in aging perception based on demographic factors such as age, sex, education, family type, or health condition.
