Abstract
Purpose Statement The purpose of this study was to explore the motivating experiences of geriatric nurses in pursuing Gerontology Nursing. The participants were asked the grand tour question: “What experiences have motivated you to choose Geriatric Nursing?”
Scope and Limitations The study utilized a qualitative descriptive approach that focused on the motivating experiences of geriatric nurses. The research emphasized the crucial role of past and present experiences in shaping the career of geriatric nurses, emphasizing that their decision to choose Geriatric Nursing is often influenced by significant motivating factors from both their previous and current experiences. The study included geriatric nurses who are currently employed in any geriatric hospitals or institutions in the Philippines, and who have at least one (1) year of experience in the practice. Nevertheless, despite the inclusion criteria, all the participants were obtained from nursing homes or geriatric facilities. Additionally, the interview with the participants explored their personal experiences which motivated them in specializing in Geriatric Nursing. tivated them in specializing in Geriatric Nursing. On the other hand, geriatric nurses who are employed for less than a year in their current workplace were excluded in this study. Likewise, this study excluded geriatric nurses whose reasons for staying in the expertise were not evident. Moreover, this study was limited to geriatric nurses in the Philippines.
Methodology The purpose of this study was to explore the motivating experiences of geriatric nurses in pursuing Gerontology Nursing using a qualitative descriptive research design. The researchers conducted a face-to-face interview and follow-up interviews that were recorded and transcribed. After the transcription of the recorded interviews, significant meanings were formulated and identified, and themes were generated.
Findings The findings of this study resulted in a total of 51 relevant statements that were extracted from the responses of the participants. These resulted in the identification of three themes and five subthemes. Theme 1, titled “Roots to Routes”, described the familial influence on the participants’ commitment to their profession. It discussed the experiences that motivated them to continue their career as geriatric nurses. Theme 2, titled “Igniting the Flames” discussed the participants’ passion in caring for the elderly as their reason to stay in the field. It explored the deep connections with the elderly as they have developed their passion, guiding them to embrace their role as geriatric nurses. Theme 3, titled “Stirring One’s Heart”, discussed the participants’ deep emotional connections towards their patients. The participants expressed affection through their statements, which served as their reason for staying as geriatric nurses.
