Abstract
Study Objectives The study was undertaken to determine the perceived effects of nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses in selected hospitals in Cavite.
Methodology The study utilized Quantitative Non-experimental Type of Design to determine the perceived effects of nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses and determine if there is a significant difference in perceptions when they are grouped according to age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, religion, years of experience, and monthly salary.
Major Findings The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. In terms of demographics, the majority of respondents are female (69.7%), aged between 31-39 (51.52%), single (56.82%), hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (97.73%), Catholic (85.61%), and have 6 months to 1 year of experience (27.27%). Their monthly salaries range between Php 12,000 to 22,999 (53.03%). 2. Summary of the results for perceptions on the effects of the nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses in selected hospitals in Cavite show an overall computed mean score of 3.19 and a standard deviation of 0.613 which revealed that the respondents perceived to a high extent the effects of the nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses in selected hospitals in Cavite. 3. The null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the perception on the effects of nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses when they are grouped according to age, civil status, highest educational attainment, religion, years of experience, and monthly salary is accepted. The null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the perception on the effects of nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life of staff nurses when they are grouped according to sex is rejected.
Conclusions 1. Most of the respondents were between 21-30 years old, female, single, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) graduates, Catholic, worked 6 months to 1 year, and earning a gross monthly salary ranging from PhP 12,000-PhP 22,999. 2. The respondents perceived the effects of the nursing shortage on their work-related quality of life to a high extent. 3. The perception of staff nurses on the effects of nursing shortage on the work-related quality of life differed in terms of sex. The staff nurses had same perceptions of the effects of nursing shortage on their work-related quality of life regardless of age, civil status, highest educational attainment, religion, years of experience, and monthly salary.
