Abstract

Purpose Statement: This study was done to address some of the ethical concerns about the use of Generative Pre-Trained Transformers, specifically ChatGPT in Nursing education. The goals include identifying the characteristics of existing evidence concerning ChatGPT’s application in Nursing education, assess the benefits, risks, and potential challenges it presents, and propose strategies to ensure its ethical application in Nursing academia.

Scope and Limitations: The study focuses on finding a wide range of research studies that objectively explore and synthesize data that relates to the ethical usage of Chat GPT in Nursing academia without any limitation on the publication year and studies published in English would be included to avoid language barriers.

Methodology: Utilizing a scoping review, citation searches from seven databases were conducted and scrutinized using the PRISMA review process for scoping review. Consequently, the researchers conducted Title and Abstract Screening, Full-Text Review, and Data Extraction to filter out eligible articles related to the study selection or inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Major Findings: From the initial 512 citations gathered, fourteen articles were included. The main themes that arose in the study were Vigilance, Accuracy, Academic Integrity, and Non-Maleficence that are all related to the ethical implications of ChatGPT in Nursing academia. The researchers collated the frequency and percentage of various risks, challenges, and benefits, and emphasized strategies addressing the ethical use of Generative Pre-Trained Transformers like ChatGPT in Nursing academia across fourteen studies.

Conclusion: ChatGPT has potential use in Nursing and general education, however, this review shows significant ethical implications of its use in Nursing education that outweigh the benefits. Further investigations must be conducted to determine how ChatGPT can be implemented in Nursing programs. Key strategies include the development of educators’ digital literacy and AI ethics to facilitate the responsible integration of ChatGPT and advance critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
