Abstract
Objectives of the Study: General: This study aimed to determine the perceived lifestyle-related practices of adults in Brgy. Sampaloc II, Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Specific: Specifically, the study sought to determine the following: 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of Age, Sex, and Occupation 2. Perceived Lifestyle-Related Practices of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus 3. If there is a significant difference between the perceived lifestyle-related practices of adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus when grouped according to their demographic profile.
Methodology: The study utilized a Descriptive Quantitative Analytical Design using survey methods. The total population conquered 34 adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus within the age bracket of 18-69 years old. Using the purposive sampling method, the researchers utilized the Cochran’s formula to calculate the sample size which resulted in a total of 32 respondents from three puroks (Gregorio, Malinta, and Blessed Ville). Data were collected using a modified instrument entitled “Lifestyle and Habits Questionnaire–Brief Version” by Dinzeo et al. (2014), with consent, focusing only on the physical exercise, dietary lifestyle, and personal habits as the categories of lifestyle related practices. The questionnaire consisted of 30 closed-ended items, using a 4-point Likert Scale. Strongly Disagree (not practiced) and 2 - Disagree (less likely practiced), which are interpreted as negative perception, while 3 - Agree (likely practiced) and 4 - Strongly Agree (practiced) are interpreted as positive perception. The collected data and results from the respondents were then used and analyzed using statistical methods including frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, and ANOVA to determine and present the objectives of this study.
Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. Among the 32 respondents, the majority are female with a frequency and percentage of 17 (53.1%), 21 are aged between 30-64 (65.6%) and 18 (56.3%) are either non-working or retired. 2. The respondents have a positive perception on their lifestyle-related practices. Out of all the three practices, physical exercise has the evident positive perception rather than dietary lifestyle and personal habits. The overall mean value of the three lifestyle-related practices is 3.17 which signifies that the respondents have a positive perception towards the lifestyle-practices to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. 3. There is a significant difference between the perceived lifestyle-related practices of adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus when grouped according to age and occupation but not significant when grouped according to sex.
Conclusions: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the profile of clinically diagnosed type 2 Diabetes Mellitus are women, who are middle adults, and are retired or unemployed. 2. Clinically diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus have a positive perception towards Physical Exercise, Dietary Lifestyle and Personal habits. Additionally, they favor more on having a good perception towards Physical Exercise rather than Dietary Lifestyle and Personal Habits as part of their lifestyle. 3. Similar lifestyle behaviors were observed between male and female diabetes patients. Middle-aged adults face significant health risks and substantial variability in lifestyle practices. In occupation, Education, Training and Library have positive perceived lifestyle practices.
