Abstract
Objectives of the Study: General: The study was conducted to determine the perceived level of competence of the fourth-year student nurses of the De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute based on the 11 Key Areas of Responsibility (KAR). Specific: Specifically, this study sought to determine the following: 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, and self-reported academic performance. 2. Perceived level of competence of the BSN Class of 2024. 3. Significant difference between the perceived level of competence of the BSN Class of 2024 when grouped according to age, gender, and self-reported academic performance.
Methodology: The study utilized a Descriptive Quantitative Research Design to determine the perceived level of competence among DLSMHSI fourth-year student nurses and assist in finding patterns or differences when grouped according to age, gender, and self-reported academic performance.
Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. In terms of age, the sample largely consists of 21-year-old student nurses, who took up 32.1% of the total sample. This was followed by 22-, 23-, and 24-year-old student nurses, who took up 55.8%, 10.3%, and 1.8% of the total sample, respectively. 2. In terms of gender, the sample largely consists of 126 female student nurses, who make up 76.4% of the total sample, followed by 39 male respondents, who make up the remaining 23.6%. 3. Regarding self-reported academic performance, the sample consisted of 98 fourth-year student nurses who stated that their academic performance was Good, taking up 59.4% of the total sample. This was followed by 49 fourth-year student nurses who stated that their academic performance was Fair and 18 fourth-year student nurses who stated that their academic performance was Very Good, taking up 29.7% and 10.9% of the total sample size, respectively. 4. For the statement of the problem 2, the perceived level of competence of the fourth-year student nurses was very high with an overall mean of 8.45. Additionally, these learners ranked the highest in “Records Management” and lowest in “Research.” 5. For the statement of the problem 3, the data revealed that when grouped according to self-reported academic performance, students with higher reported academic performance tended to have a greater level of competence in the Key Areas of Responsibility. Meanwhile, age and gender did not influence the perceived level of competence of the respondents.
Conclusions: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most respondents were female, aged 21–24, with self-reported academic performance of ‘Good’. 2. The results revealed that the respondents of Batch 2024 in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute had an overall mean score of 8.45 in the 11 Key Areas of Responsibility (KAR), which can be interpreted as a “very high” level of competence in each KAR. Moreover, ranking the 11 KAR, the respondents perceived themselves as most competent in Records Management and least competent in Research. 3. There was a significant difference in the perceived level of competence of the BSN Class of 2024 when grouped according to self-reported academic performance. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the perceived level of competence of the BSN Class of 2024 when grouped according to age and gender.
