Abstract

Objectives of the Study The study aimed to determine the knowledge and practices related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions: 1. Profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, marital status, monthly family income, educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension. 2. Level of knowledge related to hypertension of the respondents. 3. Level of practices related to hypertension of the respondents. 4. If there are significant differences in the knowledge related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite when they are grouped according to age, gender, marital status, income, educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension. 5. If there are significant differences in the practices related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite when they are grouped according to age, gender, monthly family income, educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension. 6. If there is a significant relationship between knowledge and practices related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite.

Methodology: The study utilized a correlational research design and homogeneous purposive sampling method to determine the knowledge and practices related to hypertension. The data were collected through adapted and modified questionnaires.

Major Findings: The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. Out of 375 respondents, 47.7% were 20-40 years old (young adulthood), 72.3% were female, 58.1% were married, 31.5% had a monthly family income of less than ₱10, 957 (poor), 34.1% were college graduates, and 70.4% were not diagnosed with hypertension. 2. The level of knowledge related to hypertension in terms of facts was interpreted at a very high extent, with an overall mean of 3.40. Moreover, modifiable and nonmodifiable factors were interpreted as high extent, with an overall mean of 3.00 and 3.19, respectively. 3. The level of practices related to hypertension in terms of dietary habits and physical activity was interpreted as frequent, with an overall mean of 3.13 and 2.55, respectively. Moreover, health behavior management was interpreted periodically, with an overall mean of 2.15. 4. The knowledge related to hypertension of the respondents when grouped according to age, gender, monthly family income, highest educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension had no significant difference, and when grouped according to marital status, had a significant difference with a p-value (0.007), lesser than the 0.05 level of significance. 5. The practices related to hypertension of the respondents when grouped according to age, gender, marital status, monthly family income, highest educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension had no significant difference with p-values of 0.834, 0.081, 0.645, 0.457, 0.841, and 0.945, respectively greater than the 0.05 level of significance. 6. The knowledge and practices related to hypertension of the respondents had a significant difference with a correlation coefficient of 0.106, interpreted as negligible correlation, with the p value of 0.029 which is less than 0.05 level of significance.

Conclusion: From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the respondents were 20-40 years old (young adulthood), female, married, had a monthly family income of < ₱10, 957 (poor), college graduates, and not diagnosed with hypertension. 2. The level of knowledge related to hypertension of the respondents was at a high extent. 3. The level of frequency of practices related to hypertension varies. 4. There were no significant differences in the knowledge related to hypertension when grouped according to age, gender, monthly family income, educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension. However, there was a significant difference in the knowledge related to hypertension when grouped according to marital status. 5. There were no significant differences in the practices related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite when they were grouped according to age, gender, marital status, monthly family income, educational attainment, and number of years diagnosed with hypertension. 6. There was a weak but significant relationship between knowledge and practices related to hypertension among residents of Brgy. Burol III, Dasmariñas City, Cavite
