Abstract

Purpose Statement The aim of the study was to explore and analyze the lived experiences of non-STEM nursing students at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI). It centered on the grand tour question: “What are your experiences as a non-STEM graduate enrolled in the College of Nursing at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute?”

Scope and Limitations: The study centered on non-STEM graduates currently enrolled in the College of Nursing at DLSMHSI from all year levels. It is focused on psychological aspects, which excluded the academic performance, finances, previous school, sex/gender of the participants. Additionally, the students from different colleges in the institution, and those who have filed for Leave of Absence, dropped out or graduated from the College of Nursing were excluded.

Methodology: The study applied a qualitative descriptive research design focusing on the experiences of non-STEM students enrolled in the College of Nursing at DLSMHSI. The study was able to gather seven (7) participants who were interviewed. The researchers utilized the 7 steps of Colaizzi’s method to thematically analyze the accumulated data from the participants.

Findings After the data were analyzed, five (5) different themes emerged. The first theme is “Treading on Unfamiliar Grounds”, second is “Building Bridges”, third is “Paving the Path”, fourth theme is “Lighter Steps” and lastly, “Adapted to Nature”. These themes consolidate the challenges and opportunities, coping mechanisms,
