Abstract
The study utilized a quantitative descriptive-analytical research design to describe the challenges experienced by Filipino male nurses in caring for female patients. A non-probability controlled quota and snowball sampling were used to select the 149 respondents through the following criteria: a) registered Filipino male nurse, regardless of gender preference, who has experience providing care to female patients; b) has an experience in caring for female patients for at least one (1) year or less; c) is able to handle female patients regardless of the assigned nursing field or department; and d) who agreed to become a respondent of the study as testified in the informed consent . The study was conducted online through Google forms. The self-made questionnaire used was based on Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring (1979), Conroy's The Fundamentals of Care Framework (2016) and the review of related literature. It utilized a four-point Likert scale. Data was analyzed through frequency distribution, percentage, standard deviation, weighted mean, t-test and ANOVA test. From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Most of the male nurses, in the age range of 26 to 35, married, with bachelor’s degree, and had been assigned in the hospital ward for more than five years, found providing physical, psychosocial, and relational care less challenging. However, they perceive certain areas as more challenging, which include having their female colleagues perform physical examinations of female clients' intimate areas, concerns about client misunderstandings during physical examinations, observing client avoidance of eye contact and physical touch due to embarrassment, clients expressing discomfort when discussing sexual health, and inability to provide care due to religious and cultural reasons. 2. The challenges faced by Filipino male nurses are consistent across different age groups, marital status, employment tenure, and clinical area of practice except for the educational attainment.
