Abstract

The study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed method design following a sequential approach that consists of two phases: the quantitative phase, where data were collected and analyzed to determine the challenges of the respondents in communicating with patients and if there is a significant difference in the challenges of the respondents in patient communication in their related learning experience when grouped in terms of sex. And subsequently followed by the qualitative phase to validate and broaden the findings of the study on the challenges experienced by the respondents in patient communication in their related learning experience. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents were female nursing students and specified that they found it slightly challenging to communicate with patients during the orientation phase while moderately challenging during the working phase and resolution phase. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in the challenges of third-year nursing students in patient communication in their related learning experience across all phases when respondents are grouped according to sex. Additionally, the participants expressed the different challenges they had encountered that brought them challenging experiences in communicating with patients during their related learning experience.
