Medication Administration, Virtually Learned

Abstract

This study used a qualitative interview approach to explore the experiences of the DLSMHSI nursing students batch of 2024 in administering medications in the clinical setting as virtually learned. The researchers conducted in-person and audio-recorded one-on-one interviews with the participants to obtain information about their specific experiences. The researchers also used bracketing to prevent biased data collection outcomes. In terms of the sampling method, the researchers used purposive sampling with the following criteria: 1) 3rd-year nursing student, 2) virtual medication administration education, 3) clinical experience administering medications with at least two different routes, 4) willingness to share experiences, and 5) ability to articulate experiences. Furthermore, the researchers used manual transcription for the data analysis, through the following steps: 1) assigning codes to each participant, 2) translating the audio to textual form, 3) line-by- line coding, 4) grouping the data into themes, and 5) data analysis. After the data were analyzed, three (3) themes were identified. The first theme "Barriers to Virtual Classes" refers to the participants’ expression of unmet expectations in applying their nursing skills completely as the resources and exposure are limited. Furthermore, the participants expressed their disappointments as they were not able to practice with an actual patient or even with a partner to enhance their skills and knowledge in medication administration. The second theme, Into the Unknown refers to the participants’ expression of their struggles, anxiety, and lack of confidence when they initially applied their skills to patients. The participants did, however, have a positive outlook on their first time administering medications as they developed empathy and were cautious with their patients while carrying out their duties as student nurses. The third theme The Joy in Learning tackles the accomplishments that were achieved by the participants which gave them confidence, new knowledge, and experiences that helped them understand and adapt to the new environment. Despite learning almost everything virtually, the participants were able to stay motivated, inspired, and most importantly, believed in themselves.
