Abstract

The study utilized a non-experimental descriptive design. The respondents were nursing students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute with absent parent/s and were identified using purposive sampling. The researchers adapted the instrument from Dr. Richard Boyum’s (2011) Psychosocial Task Development Inventory, which was based from the work of Don Hamachek, Ph.D. in Michigan State University. Data was analysed using frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and f-test. Majority of the respondents were 18-21 years old, female, belong to a traditional family structure, were the eldest in the family, have one absent parent, have absent parents due to working or residing abroad, and have an absent parent for 1 to 4 years. The respondents perceived that having an absent parent had no effect on their psychosocial development in general. Specifically, the respondents perceived that having an absent parent affected their behavioral expression of trust to a low extent. Moreover, the respondents perceived that having an absent parent had no effect on their behavioral expression of autonomy, initiative, industry, identity, and intimacy. There was a significant difference on the perceived effect of having an absent parent on the psychosocial development of the respondents when they were grouped according to family structure. However, there were no significant differences on the perceived effect of having an absent parent on the psychosocial development of the respondents when they were grouped according to age, gender, ordinal position, number of absent parents, nature of parental absence, and the length of time their parent/s is/are away.
