Abstract
The objectives of this study were to determine the common beliefs and practices about childbearing and to determine if there is a significant implication of this beliefs and practices to the health of selected respondents. The research was limited only in getting the beliefs and practices on childbearing from pregnancy up to post partum period and its implication to the health of the mothers. Child care will not be included in the study. This will be conducted specifically in Brgy. San Simon. Due to time limitation there were only thirty (30) mothers who were selected. Only those who are belonging to 30-50 years and staying permanently in the said community were the respondents. Data that were gathered were applicable only in the selected area and will not be affected by beliefs and practices of other communities. Instrument was closed ended type of questionnaire supplemented with interview. During the prenatal period, some respondents had been practicing the use of binder would prevent hyperacidity and would prevent the increasing fetus from exerting over her diaphragm. While some are not practicing the following: too much sleep can cause edema; the abdomen of pregnant woman should not be massaged resulting to bigger baby leading to difficulty in labor; the pregnant mother should practice reading books so that her baby would become intelligent; eating twin bananas would result to twin babies; frequent smoking would affect the fetus physically and mentally; leaping her husband could cause him to feel the morning sickness; frequent drinking of alcohol would affect the fetus physically and mentally. During post partum period, some respondents had been practicing, avoiding fatigue just after the delivery would lessen her of becoming ill; using boiled water with the leaves of kamias would be used in taking a bath; lifting heavy objects should be avoided to prevent bleeding caused by the subinvolution of the uterus; sitting in a container with boiled guava leaves would promote healing of the perineum; massaging the uterus would result to an immediate return to its normal size and position; eating sour fruits and foods could be avoided to prevent the cessation of breast milk, and washing of hands and feet until 1 week should be avoided to prevent cold absorption; while one does not participating, taking a bath should be done until the post partum mother reaches her 15 days after delivery. Using Chi Square test with 83.98 and 80.09 as obtained value, it was found out that there is a significant implication of this beliefs and practices about childbearing to the health of selected respondents.
