Abstract
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES: General: The purpose of the study was to determine burnout syndrome among College of Nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute.
Specific: Specifically, this study sought to answer to the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the College of Nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in terms of age, marital status, employment status, number of years of teaching experiences, and other relevant academic tasks/functions? 2. What is the level of burnout syndrome among the college of nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute? 3. Is there a significant difference in the level of burnout among the College of Nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in terms of age, marital status, employment status, number of years of teaching experience, and other relevant academic tasks/burnout level?
METHODOLOGY: This study utilized analytical research design. The researchers used a non-probability voluntary sampling method. The research used a fivepoint Likert scale in interpreting the results. The research instrument for this study was a modified Copenhagen burnout inventory tool. The tool was divided into three scales for calculating personal burnout which consists of six items, work-related burnout that has seven items, and student and co- workers related burnout with six items. The respondents of this study were all from the College of Nursing faculty members of DLSMHSI employed during the second semester Academic Year 2020-2021. There was a total of (54) respondents, but only forty-four (44) respondents have voluntarily participated in the study. This research was conducted through Google Forms. Statistical tests were used to answer and to test the hypothesis of this study. This includes, (a) weighted mean, (b) percentage distribution, (c)Mann-Whitney Test and (d) Kruskal- Wallis H- Test.
MAJOR FINDINGS: The following findings were drawn from the study: 1. Out of 44 respondents, it was revealed that 16 or 36% were 50 years old and above, 27 or 61% were already married, 24 or 55% has a fulltime job status, 13 or 30% has 16 to 20 years of teaching experience, and 29 or 66% does not hold an institutional or collegiate administrative post. 2. An overall mean of 2.63 and standard deviation of 1.03 indicates that respondents’ level of experiencing burnout syndrome is moderate. 3. The faculty members from the College of Nursing of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute did not have significant difference when grouped according to age (f value = 0.888, p-value = 0.419 > 0.05 level of significance), employment status (f value= 1.375, p-value= 0.264 > 0.05 level of significance), and number of years of teaching experience (f-value= 0.594, p-value= 0.699 > 0.05 level of significance). However, a significant difference was revealed when group according to marital status (t-value= 0.052, p-value 0.949 < 0.05 level of significance), holding an administrative post (t-value= 1.129, pvalue= 0.265 < 0.05 level of significance).
Conclusions From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The majority of the respondents were of age ranging from 50 years old and above, married, have 16 to 20 years of teaching experience inside and outside of DLSMHSI, were full time employees, and have no institutional or collegiate administrative post. 2. The College of Nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute had moderate burnout levels in experiencing burnout syndrome which indicates that they sometimes feel burnout. 3. There was no significant difference in burnout syndrome among the College of Nursing faculty members of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in terms of employment status, and years of teaching experience. However, a significant difference was found when grouped according to marital status and holding an administrative post.
