Abstract

This study used quantitative, non-experimental descriptive type of research methodology. Using criterion sampling, the entire population of female students of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing of Batch 2011 from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute in Dasmarinas, Cavite was taken as the respondents of the study. A questionnaire created by the researchers on the effects of media images on the perception of female nursing students of DLSHSI Batch 2011 on body image enhancement were distributed to the participants to gather pertinent data. The statistical instruments used were mean, frequency distribution, f-test-p-test, t-test, percentage and f-ratio. The study concluded that, 1) Most of the respondents are Catholic and ambivert. Majority of them has monthly allowance that ranges from Php1,000 to Php6,000; 2) The perceptions of the respondents are represented by an overall mean level of 2.59 which signifies that they highly agree with the statements presented in the questionnaire. The statement “I feel inspired seeing pretty women on movies or television” has the highest mean level out of the questions provided in the questionnaire and is included in the agree bracket. The statement “The information regarding cosmetic surgery motivates me to have faith in these procedures for the improvement of my body image” got the lowest average and is included in the disagree bracket; 3) There is no significant difference in the perception of the respondents when they are grouped according to religion, monthly allowance and personality. This suggests that the perception of female nursing students of DLSHSI Batch 2011 on the effects of media images on body image enhancement is not affected by the respondents’ profile.
