Abstract

The main objective of the study was to determine the three most common factors that brough about mental illness based on the perceptions of staff nurses in Pagamutan Pangkaisipan in Trece Martires City. Specifically it determine also the perception of staff nurses regarding the period of rehabilitation related to the three most common factors they perceived and the area needed to be developed in order to improve the care provided by the institution to their patient. Based on the computed data on perception of staff nurses, those patients who suffered from mental illness were precipitated by psychogenic factors which needs 6 to 12 months period of rehabilitation, by drug addiction which takes 2 years or more for them to recover, and by unknown factors but positive of mental illness history in the family which needs 1 year to 1 1/2 years of rehabilitation. The staff nurses in the said institution also perceived that 75% - 95% of the patients after recovery suffer from reoccurrence of their mental illness. regarding the perception of staff nurses on area which needed further development in order to improved the quality care provided by the institution ranked by priority: new treatment equipment ; additional manpower ; additional supplies and materials ; screening of personnel and increase in salary. Findings showed that majority of staff nurses perceived that psychogenic factor which includes familial conflict, loss of family members/love ones, frustration; drug addiction and hereditary factor as the three most common factors that brought about mental illness. Majority of staff nurses also perceived that 75% - 95% of the patients after recovery suffer from reoccurrence of their mental illness, thus they also perceived that in order to provide quality of care to the patient, further development regarding equipment, additional supplies/ materials, screening of personnel and increase in salary as they ranked the areas by priority.
