Abstract

This study was an attempt to find out the perception of the patient regarding the role and responsibility of the student nurses in the clinical area of Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital. The researchers wanted to know: 1. What is the role and responsibility of the student nurse as perceived by the respondents? 2. What is the advantages and disadvantages on the part of the patients of having a student nurse in the clinical area? 3. What is the quality and characteristics trait a patient looks for in a student nurse? The objective of this study was to assess the perception of the patient regarding the capability of a student nurse in the clinical area of Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital. Essentially it aimed to: 1. Determine the roles and responsibilities of the student nurse to the patient as perceived by the respondents. 2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages on the part of the patient on having a student nurse in the clinical area as perceived by the respondents. 3. Identify the qualities and characteristics a student nurse should possess as perceived by the respondents. The significance of this study was to give a better insight and knowledge of the involved persons on how to improve the training and exposure of the nursing students which will help in the development of future professional nurses and upgrade the standard quality of nursing care. It was also to provide understanding of the abilities and limitations of a student nurse. The respondents were limited only to thirty selected patients o Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital who were chosen through convenience random sampling. Data was gathered using a questionnaire and supplemented with interview. Based on the findings, almost one-half of the respondents perceived that the role and responsibility of a student nurse was to assist and follow doctors order. The other one-half believed that the student nurse should provide total nursing care and observe the patient's health condition. Regarding the advantage and disadvantage of having a student nurse on the p[art of the patient, the respondents perceived that it was more of an advantage rather than disadvantage since it provided the patient with someone to talk to about their needs and someone to take care of them. The only main disadvantages of having a student nurse on the part of the patient was the disruption in the patient's rest caused by the constant questioning of the students. Most of the respondents expected the student nurse to be thoughtful and caring, approachable, and an expert in nursing procedures. It was therefore concluded that the role and responsibility of the student nurse, as perceived by the respondents, is to assist and follow doctors orders. The advantage to the patient of having a student nurse id so that they would have someone to talk to about their needs and illness. But the disadvantage on their part is that too much questioning causes disruption in their rest. The student nurse should be and is expected to be thoughtful and caring to their patients. All of the null hypothesis (HO #1, HO #2, and HO #3) were rejected since there was a significant difference in the respondents perception regarding the role and responsibility of a student nurse, the advantage and disadvantage on the part of the patient of having one in the clinical area, and the quality and characteristics trait the student nurse should possess.
