Abstract
The researchers used the exploratory type of research in conducting the study. The sampling units for this study included forty nurses from the Geriatric center and selected wards (‘I Care’ Ward, General Medicine Ward) at St. Luke’s Medical Center, all of whom re in active practice of dealing and caring or the elderlies aged sixty-five years old and above using purposive sampling. The researchers made use of books and studies gathered to determine the problems mostly encountered by nursing in caring for the elderly. A checklist of responses was also designed by the researchers themselves supplemented with interviews. The statistical treatments used were the frequency and percentage, correlation analysis, and T-test on two samples. An analysis of the study revealed that the most common problems encountered b nurses were: frequent transferring, carrying and turning of patient; irritation towards “makulit” patients, uncooperativeness of patients; dirty works (i.e. changing of diapers, enema, etc.); and difficulty in making conversations. It was also found out that they utilized the following corresponding responses: ask nurse aides to assist them; just keep quiet and more patience; gain full trust by establishing rapport; do the task themselves; and use appropriate communication techniques. There is also no significant difference existed between the responses of nurses with elderlies living with them to nurses with no elderlies living with them, and that there is no significant relationship between the number of years of caring for elderlies and he nurses’ level of attitude except for problem number 1 under physical which rejected the hypothesis. It also showed that there is no significant relationship between the frequency of the problems encountered to the attitude of nurses towards caring for elderly patients.
