Abstract
Through purposive sampling, 23 registered medical technologists from 11 level 3 clinical laboratories in the Province of Cavite were chosen to participate in this study. Descriptive research design was utilized as the variable were beyond the control of the researchers. Data gathering was done through online platform, Google forms, wherein the survey questionnaires were accomplished by the participants. For the data analysis, descriptive statistics such as weighted mean, median, frequency, standard deviation and percentage were used. Smoking cigarettes is regarded as a way to relieve stress caused by various workplace conditions such as long working hours, schedule of duty, repetitive work routine, and peer pressure. Economic factors such as accessibility, availability and affordability also enable smokers to continue their used of cigarettes. The combination of the factors mentioned contributes to the use of cigarettes as a mean of coping among medical technologists. Effects of smoking would manifest as a result of the smoker's amount and length of exposure to the harmful chemicals of cigarettes. A small number of participants experienced frequency coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath after smoking. In contrast. most of the respondents claimed to be unaffected by the health problems caused by smoking which can be attributed to the data that their usage of cigarette sticks does not exceed 10 sticks per day. It is also vital to note that most of the respondents have not exceeded 5 years of smoking.
