Abstract

Pharmaceutical drugs, herbal supplements, and caffeinated beverages are examples of cognitive enhancers. These are believed to improve mental skills such as attention, creativity, memory, and focus, when consumed. This study used a quantitative observational research design to see if there’s a significant difference in performance between consumers and non-consumers among 3rd year BSMLS students by comparing their pre- and post-test results. The research used a pre-survey to gather the demographic profile of the respondents in order meet the study's goal. After abstaining from certain type of CE for one week, both consumers and non-consumers conducted a 30-item pre-test. Another one-week interval was given for consumers to consume their specific CE before taking the 30-item post-test, together with the non-consumers. A total of 59 respondents, with 42 (71.2%) females and 17 (28.8%) males, participated in the study. Out of the total population, most respondents are consumers with a total of 39 answers (66%), and 20 responses (34%) from non-consumers. Coffee was found to be the most consumed form of cognitive enhancer among consumers in general. Most respondents obtained good in both the preand post-test findings. However, it shows that there is a significant difference between the pre- and post-test results among consumers, but no significant difference between consumers and nonconsumers. The conclusions of this study can serve as a useful study for students to understand the likely impacts of different CE on their academic performance, - beneficial or not - and be able to pass their knowledge to their students.
