Abstract

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis are one of the most common infections around the globe that burdens humans. These are caused by parasitic worms such as roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), and Hookworms (Necator americanus or Ancylostoma duodenale), which mostly affects areas with poor sanitation, moist, warm weather, and can be transmitted via oral-fecal route or skin penetration. On the other hand, garbage truck collector are those responsible in handling, managing and collecting wastes. With this line of work, occupational hazards increase, predisposing them into various kinds of infections, such as STH infections. The results of this finding showed that out of 88 respondents, mostly male, aged 22-44 year old truck garbage collectors, 59 were positive for STH infection with hookworm infections having the highest prevalence (36.4%), followed by Ascariasis (21.6%), and Trichuriasis (9.1%), with most infections categorized as light to moderate. Findings also showed no significant relationship between the demographic profile of age, sex, and STH infection, but a significant relationship with work designation, with most garbage truck collectors being infected than garbage truck drivers. Lastly, results also showed no significant relationship between STH intensity and age. While significant relationship between STH intensity and work designation and sex could not be identified, as all positive samples came from one category mainly truck garbage collectors and male, respectively.
