Abstract
This research utilized Ficus species that are endemic in the Philippines, namely Ficus odorata (Blanco) Merr., Ficus pseudopalma Blanco and Ficus ulmifolia Lam. Determination of antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibition activity were performed. Antioxidant activity was determined using ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) with ascorbic acid as a standard. For α-glucosidase inhibition, the α-glucosidase inhibition assay was used with acarbose as standard. Results in FRAP assay showed that F. odorata, F. pseudopalma and F. ulmifolia all exhibited ferric reducing antioxidant activity relative to ascorbic acid. On the other hand, for α-glucosidase inhibition assay, F. ulmifolia with IC50 value of 1.623± 0.248 and F. odorata with IC50 value of 1.808± 0.21 showed inhibition against the enzyme. The relative to its standard acarbose with an IC50 value of 0.621± 0.567. However, F.pseudopalma showed no to low inhibition against the enzyme at lower concentrations. This research represents the first study regarding antioxidant activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the selected Philippine Ficus species.
