Isolation, purification, and characterization of Diospyros maritima Blume leaf extracts

Abstract

Diospyros maritima Blume contains chemical constituents that exhibit antimicrobial activities. Studies regarding the biological activities of D. maritima Blume leaves are still scanty, but the stems have been traditionally used as a treatment for rheumatic diseases. In this study, the phytochemical investigation of petroleum ether, dichloromethane, and ethanol crude extracts was performed. Isolated compounds were characterized through chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the crude and pure extracts were also evaluated representative gram-positive bacterium (Staphylococcus aureus), gram-negative bacterium (Escherichia coli), and fungus (Candida albicans). All crude extracts showed an activity against the representative microorganisms except Escherichia coli. Among the three crude extracts, petroleum ether extract had the strongest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and C. albicans at a concentration of 100 µg/ µL and 200 µg/ µL, respectively. The pure extracts had no activity against the representative microorganisms. The study showed that the pure extracts contain terpene and terpenoid characteristics based on spectroscopic and chemical analyses.
