Abstract
This study aims to decrease postpartum depression (PPD) among mothers seen at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Out Patient Department (OPD) of a tertiary hospital in Dasmariñas, Cavite through early detection and intervention of antenatal anxiety and depression. This is a randomized controlled trial involving 270 charity patients initially seen on their second trimester of pregnancy. Patients were randomized to intervention group (n=135) or to the routine prenatal care group (n=135). The validated Filipino version of HADS (cut off score ≥ 8 for both anxiety and depression) was used antepartum for screening and EPDS (cut off score ≥ 9) was used postpartum to determine the primary outcome. There was a significant difference in the mean EPDS scores between the routine prenatal care and antenatal psychotherapy groups (mean= 8.2 and 5.7 respectively, 95%CI, p =0.000). The intervention group showed a lower EPDS score than the control group.
