The pox that makes you weak : a case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome at the onset of primary varicella zoster virus infection

Abstract

A case of a 34-year-old female, Filipino, who presented with a 4-day history of progressive weakness of extremities, with areflexia presenting on 2nd hospital day. At the onset of weakness, appearance of a vesicular lesion on the face was noted, which spread through the trunk, back and extremities wit associated fever on 3rd hospital day, and this was clinically compatible with a varicella zoster virus infection. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies revealed a demyelinating type of polyneuropathy.
