Abstract

The Airtaq laryngoscope is an indirect laryngoscope designed to facilitate effective and safe tracheal intubation under various conditions, including the difficult airway. In this study, the Airtaq is compared to the Macintosh laryngoscope in Filipino patients aged not less than 15 years old and classified as Mallampati II-IV. Sixty patients presenting for surgery requiring tracheal intubation were randomly allocated to undergo intubation using a Macintosh (n=30) or Airtaq (n=30) laryngoscope. No significant differences in demographic or airway variable were observed between the groups. The Airtaq resulted in an improvement in the intubation difficulty score and a better Cormack and Lehane glottis view. These findings demonstrate that the Airtaq is superior to the Macintosh laryngoscope for tracheal intubation in Filipino patients aged 15 and above who are classified as Mallampati II-IV.
