Abstract

A descriptive study where a retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data was done. Included in the study were cases with pre and post operative diagnosis of acute cholecystitis (AC) as well as those admitted from non-AC causes but had a post-op diagnosis of AC. Case were further grouped to severe AC and non-severe AC. Primary outcome measure included were intraoperative adverse event, mortality and conversion rates. Timing of surgery, mean operative time, post-op VAS scores, and post-op hospital stays were secondary outcome measures calculated. The study concluded that the first three years of our experience with laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis shows that it is feasible and safe such that there is low IAE rate, low conversion rate, and no mortality. Furthermore, it confers the advantages of low postoperative pain.
