Latent syphilis in pregnancy : the beneficial of antenatal screening

Abstract
Syphilis screening was one of the routine prenatal screening because of the seriously complication in pregnancy, as well as serious sequelae in liveborn infected children that developed from congenital syphilis. While appropriate treatment of pregnant women often prevents such complications, the major treatment has been inability to identify the infected women and get them to undergo treatment. Screening in the first trimester with non-treponemal tests combined with confirmation of reactive individuals with treponemal tests combined with confirmation of reactive individuals with treponemal tests is a cost-effective strategy. The preferred treatment for syphilis is penicillin, even for pregnant woman. In determining a penicillin regimen, the clinician must consider the stage of the maternal infection and the HIV status of the mother. A case of 33 years old with intrauterine pregnancy who had reactive result on serologic test for syphilis but with absence of clinical manifestations of syphilis and diagnosed with latent phase syphilis. She was treated with penicillin regimen and continued with the intrauterine pregnancy till term and delivered a healthy female baby.
