Abstract
The study aimed to determine the individual antifungal properties of Aloe barbadensis Miller (aloe vera), Cassia alata (Akapulko), Mimosa pudica (Makahiya), and Psidium guajava (Guava) ethanolic leaf extracts and their synergistic effects on Candida albicans in comparison to Fluconazole. The researchers employed a controlled experimental design wherein the antifungal properties of the ethanolic leaf extracts individually and synergistically were obtained based on the measurement of the zone of inhibition (mm) using a Vernier caliper. This study found that only Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) and Cassia alata(akapulko) produced zones of inhibition (10mm and 8mm, respectively) against Candida albicans. However, there were no significant difference between the individual antifungal properties of Aloe barbadensis Miller, Cassia alata, Mimosa pudica, and Psidium guajava ethanolic leaf extracts but when compared to Fluconazole, there was a significant difference. Moreover, there was no synergistic effects observed for any of the plant extract combinations.
