Abstract
Objective. The objective of this study is to review and gather the mortality data from several studies of CP in COVID-19 that was procured from the MEDLINE database and to determine its effects in reducing the mortality in moderate-to-severe COVID-19 patients.
Methods. A comprehensive search was conducted using the MEDLINE database. From 115 yielded search results, the researchers independently screened and selected only 13 studies that fit the inclusion criteria. The data regarding the mortality was extracted and recorded. OpenMeta[Analyst] software was used to calculate the odds ratio and produce the forest plot using the DerSimonian-Laird random effects method. For the case series and case reports studies, Google sheets were used to calculate the aggregated mortality data.
Results. The aggregated data of the meta-analysis showed that the result is statistically significant (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.98; P = 0.011; I2 = 61.71%), implying that the CP reduces the mortality of moderate-to-severe COVID-19 patients. In case series and case reports showed mortality (12.7%) despite transfusion of convalescent plasma.
Conclusion. This meta-analysis supports other established evidence that the infusion of convalescent plasma reduces the mortality of adult (≥18 years old) patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19.
