Abstract
This community-based rotavirus prevention and control program was designed to reduce the occurrence of rotavirus infections among children in Barangay Basak, San Nicolas, through a sustainable and participatory public health approach. The program’s core strategies included training Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) to enhance their knowledge and skills in health education and hygiene promotion, implementing community awareness campaigns via health workshops and health fairs, and establishing sanitation infrastructure such as handwashing stations. The multi-phase methodology involved capacity building, community engagement, infrastructure development, and continuous monitoring and evaluation to assess impact and inform improvements. Key outcomes demonstrated significant increases in community knowledge about rotavirus transmission and prevention, and improved hygiene practices, which contributed to a reduction in rotavirus-related morbidity. The program’s emphasis on community ownership, culturally sensitive interventions, and integration into existing health systems fostered sustainability. Challenges such as resource constraints and cultural beliefs were addressed through stakeholder collaboration and tailored educational materials. Ongoing monitoring indicated positive trends and highlighted areas for further strengthening. The findings suggest that targeted, community-led interventions—when rooted in local participation and sustainable practices—can effectively decrease rotavirus infections and improve overall child health. This initiative underscores the importance of continuous community engagement, capacity building, and policy support to sustain health gains and expand outreach to neighboring barangays, ultimately contributing to long-term public health improvements.
