Abstract
Background: Mothers have the most significant role in rendering newborn care. The risk of death in children is at its highest during the first 28 days of life. This study intends to determine the knowledge and practices of mothers who gave birth in a government hospital about newborn care and in due course, make recommendations that can be a basis for a proposed enhancement in health education program to ensure effective and efficient newborn care.
Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional research design is used in this study to establish the relationship between the knowledge and practices of mothers on newborn care.
Key Findings: The following results were obtained from the analysis of the collected data: 1. Mothers have good knowledge and always practice proper newborn care including breastfeeding, bathing, cord care, maintaining thermoregulation, early sunlight exposure, immunization, newborn screening and hearing tests, and assessing danger signs in newborns. 2. Regardless of age, civil status, employment status, educational attainment, and number of children, mothers have good knowledge and always practice proper newborn care. 3. There is a significant moderate positive relationship between mothers’ knowledge and their practices regarding proper newborn care.
Conclusion: A greater number of the respondents are young adults, ranging from 18 - 39 years of age, single, unemployed, high school graduates, with 2 - 3 children. They have good knowledge and always practice proper newborn care regarding breastfeeding, bathing and cord care, maintaining thermoregulation, early sunlight exposure, immunization, newborn screening and hearing test, and assessing danger signs in newborns. Age, civil status, employment status, educational attainment, and number of children do not influence the respondent’s knowledge and practices regarding proper newborn care. There is a significant moderate positive relationship between mothers’ knowledge and their practices regarding proper newborn care; consequently, a greater understanding of proper newborn care would likely result in more consistent newborn care practices.
