Abstract

Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is extremely common, has a long duration, and is difficult to treat. The goal of this study was to see how Innovative Health Education affected COPD patients in the Mutual Assistance Group's self-management levels. WeChat was utilized to deliver Innovative Health Education in this study.

Methods: This study specifically used a quasi-experimental design. The treatment group underwent a one-month WeChat mutual group intervention, and no intervention was used in the comparison group. Furthermore, the Self-Management Scale (SMS) was used to assess patients' self-management levels before and after the intervention in order to see how Innovative Health Education affected COPD patients' self-management.

Results: Of the 96 participants, 50 (52.08%) were male and 46 (47.92%) were female (p-value=0.5060). Forty-two (43.75%) were aged 47-53; 21 (21.88%), aged 54-60; 19 (19.79%), aged 40-46; and 14 (14.58%), aged 61-67(p-value=0.9772). Seventy-seven (80.21%) were married; 11 (11.46%), divorced; and 8 (8.33%), widowed (p-value=0.4404). Twenty-four (25%) finished Associate Degree; 23 (23.96%), Junior High School; 20 (20.83%), Primary School; 18 (18.75%), High School; and 11 (11.46%) finished a Bachelor's Degree as their education level (p- value=0.2829). Forty-three (44.79%) had a monthly income of more than 5000RMB; 28 (29.17%), 3000-5000RMB; 13 (13.54%), 1000-3000RMB; and 12 (12.50%), less than 1000RMB (p-value=0.9868). Thirty-nine (40.63%) had a 2-year duration of illness; 28 (29.17%),1 year; 18 (18.75%), 3 years; 6 (6.25%), 4 years; and 5 (5.21%), 5 years (p-value=0.2673). The results show that the p-value is more than 0.05 indicating that there is no significant difference in term of sex, age, civil status, educational level, monthly income and duration of illness between the treatment group and the comparison group. Indent general, both the treatment (Mean=128.15, SD=17.634) and comparison groups (Mean=128.15, SD=17.634) have a moderate level of self-management prior to the Innovative Health Education intervention. The treatment group (Mean=163.58, SD=36.641) shows a high level of self-management after the intervention, whereas the comparison group (Mean=130.23, SD=16.248) shows a moderate level. Indent the treatment group, there is a significant difference in self-management levels before and after Innovative Health Education (t-ratio=-5.5093, p=0.0001). Indent the comparison group, there is no significant difference in self-management levels before and after Innovative Health Education (t-ratio=-0.62, p=0.5487). There is a significant difference in the change in level of self-management (before and after) between the treatment and comparison groups (t-ratio= -6.7978, p=0.0001).

Conclusion: The results of this study show that Innovative Health Education have a significant effect on the self-management levels of COPD patients in the Mutual Assistance Group. Innovative Health Education is helpful in improving the self- management level of COPD patients.
