Abstract

Introduction: Chronic gastritis, the most common disease of the digestive system increases with age and while this is often neglected in clinical practice, the risk of chronic gastritis in the older persons is increasing. Thus, the management of older persons with chronic gastritis is particularly important. The purpose of this paper is to systematically evaluate the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the management of older persons with chronic gastritis (CG).

Methods:

This study was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) methodology framework for analyzing effective management strategies for chronic gastritis in the older person. A systematic search in electronic databases such as Clinical Key, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, SCOPUS, Science Direct and UpToDate from 2017-2021 was conducted. Review Manager software version 5.4, the Cochrane Collaboration’s risk of bias tool was used for this study.

Results: Nine studies involving 794 participants (397 in the experimental group and 397 in the control group) were included in this study. The data showed that the TCM

was significantly more effective than the routine pharmacotherapies (RP) group in terms of effectiveness in the management of chronic gastritis, and the incidence of adverse effects was lower in the herbal group. In addition, Chinese medicine health education interventions and psychological interventions by nurses for older persons with chronic gastritis are clinically effective management,and herbs that strengthen the invigorating spleen and reinforcing qi (Jianpi Yiqi) are used more frequently in clinical settings and have great promise in treating chronic gastritis.

Conclusion: In clinical practice, nurses strengthen the management of health education intervention and psychological intervention for older persons with chronic gastritis in terms of traditional Chinese medicine, which is an effective pharmacologic management practices for older persons with chronic gastritis. In addition, in the aspect of traditional Chinese medicine, strengthening the invigorating spleen and reinforcing qi (Jianpi Yiqi) is an effective TCM component in the treatment of chronic gastritis.
