Abstract

This study adopted a quasi-experimental research method and collected data through a pre-test and post-test design. Purposive sampling was used in this study, the statistical population is 54 older persons aged 60-69 living in the Evergrande Yayuan south District in Liuzhuang Community. Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to evaluate the anxiety level of participants before and after intervention, and the relationship between age, sex, family income, online health education and anxiety level was statistically analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between various variable and anxiety level. the study concluded that, 1) Most of the participants are aged between 60-64, and the family income mainly ranges from 2000-1400 RMB, 2) In general, both the treatment group and the comparison group were at a moderate anxiety level of the treatment group decreased to a mild anxiety level, while the mean for the comparison group increase but maintained a moderate level of anxiety. Online health education may help or be beneficial in reducing anxiety levels among persons during the COVID-19 pandemic, 3) The significant differences in anxiety levels before and after online health education in the treatment group suggests that the intervention is effective. The online health education is capable of decreasing anxiety level from moderate to mild, 4) In the comparison group, there is a variance in the pre and posttest brought by a slight increase in the mean but it did not alter the moderate level of anxiety. This may indicate that anxiety may increase in older persons without online health education, 5) The absence of significant difference in the anxiety level between the treatment group and the comparison group during the COVID-19 pandemic before online health education suggests that at baseline, the participants are comparable. Before online health education, both groups were in the moderate anxiety level. The anxiety level of the treatment group after online health education decreased from moderate to mild, while the anxiety level of the comparison group after online health education was moderate anxiety level by the BAI score increased slightly. The online health education may be used as intervention for older persons because absence of which may increase the anxiety experience, 6) Age, sex and monthly family income have no significant effect on the anxiety level of older persons aged 60-69 in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
