Abstract

This study utilized the true-experiment design specifically the control group and treatment group design to determine the effects of health education using WeChat on self-care ability of type 2 uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients. The respondents were selected using the block randomization and random sampling. The respondents of this study were composed of thirty- two (32) type 2 uncontrolled diabetes patients aged forty one to seventy five (41-75), where sixteen (16) were assigned to treatment group and the other half to the control group. The study was conducted at the community of DuSan community of Caidian District, Wuhan city, Hubei province. The following research instruments were used in the study: the participant’s data sheet , which was originally drafted by the researcher and The Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities of Toobert (2000) which was utilized to assess the level of self-care ability among the diabetes patients. The main statistical tools utilized in this study were a) percentage distribution, b) mean, c) standard deviation, d) pair t-test. Based on the findings generated in the study, the researcher came up with the following conclusions: 1) Majority of the respondents were 51-75 years old , male and female, married, graduated from middle school , earning 1000-2999 CNY every month, and with 3-5 years duration of illness; 2) The respondents in the control group and treatment group had the same level of self-care ability before the administration of health education; 3) The level of self-care ability did not significantly vary between the control group and treatment group before the administration of health education. Furthermore, the respondents had the same the level of self-care ability before the administration of health education. However, there was a significant improvement in the level of self-care ability among the respondents in the treatment group immediately after the administration of health education. Thus, health education has been an effective intervention in increasing the level of self-care ability among the type 2 uncontrolled diabetes mellitus patients.
