Abstract

This study investigated the experiences of mothers and fathers during the postpartum period, and the support that mothers received after they gave birth. It aimed to find out the emotional, physical, and social support that was provided to them, and how gender roles and domestic responsibilities affected a mother's recovery. Three postpartum mothers and their spouses (three fathers) were interviewed using purposive sampling based on the qualitative approach. Their responses were analyzed through thematic analysis. The results showed that partner, friend, and family emotional support helped mothers, yet most of them still did all the household work. Some mothers felt guilty when they rested or were not engaged in housework, whereas most fathers viewed themselves mainly as economic providers rather than involved caregivers. These findings suggested the persistence of customary gender roles during the postpartum period and highlighted the importance of domestic and emotional support for maternal wellbeing.
