Abstract

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that is prevalent among women starting their age of adolescence. This condition greatly affects one’s personal lives, including the physical, social, and emotional aspects of living. One of its significant focuses is how body image is affected and emphasized by the wide dynamics of the condition. This study aimed to explore how PCOS affects body image and the overall lived experiences of students, using a social constructivist and phenomenological approach. By conducting in-depth interviews with a sample of 3 students diagnosed with PCOS, the research examined the impacts of the condition on one’s self-perception, social relationships, emotional responses, and psychological processes. Results showed significant impacts of PCOS on an individual’s personal experiences and body image. The study found out that PCOS mainly affects one’s health through symptoms such as developing hormonal acne, mood fluctuations, weight changes, and different emotional responses. The research also reveals that students living with the condition developed guilt and frustrations due to financial expenses, societal pressure, and unbreakable stigma arising from the condition. With this, findings additionally show that the individuals concerned are motivated to improve themselves through the means of lifestyle changes, self-education, and the use of various social support networks. PCOS significantly imposes impacts on one’s living, especially on health development, but it can be balanced with the help of coping strategies that limits the severity of the condition. Exploring PCOS and its dynamics will contribute to a holistic observation of one’s behavior, contributing to self-development and healthy relationships.
