Abstract

Biologically-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (BB-CAM) is an emerging approach to healthcare. Its incorporation into allopathic medicine as a means of holistically preventing, alleviating, and treating disease has proven vital for promotion among medical students, both globally and locally, who are yet to integrate such into future medical practice. Hence, this study examines the knowledge, attitude, and usage of BB-CAM among first and second year medical students in De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute, Philippines, of academic year 2023-2024. Specifically, it seeks to describe their knowledge, attitude, and usage levels towards four known BB-CAM modalities: botanicals, orthomolecular medicine, probiotics, and chelation therapy. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, the survey method was utilized to derive the data needed; upon retrieving 274 valid responses through simple random sampling, measures of central tendency were obtained for data analysis. Subsequently, the following findings were derived: on the average, first and second year medical students have excellent levels of BB-CAM knowledge –– excellent: chelation therapy, probiotics; good: botanicals, orthomolecular medicine, positive degrees of BB-CAM attitude, and most have used BB-CAM at least once in their lives –– with probiotics as the most used in the past year, followed by orthomolecular medicine, botanicals, and ultimately, chelation therapy.
