Abstract

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of the healthcare system. Due to the rapid rise of cases, the government enforced safety protocols which reduced the access to healthcare services. With the physical restrictions of face-to-face consultations, the emergence of telemedicine bridges the gaps in the healthcare delivery systems and determines patients’ health seeking behavior.

The primary objective of the study was to determine the relationship between the perspectives of Filipinos from Brgy. Valencia towards telemedicine before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and its relation to their health-seeking behavior. The secondary objectives of the study include: the general patterns of health-seeking behavior, prevalent chief complaints, and the socio-demographic profile of the respondents. An observational, cross-sectional study, through a self-administered survey questionnaire was applied in the study, while the data collected was interpreted through basic descriptive statistics. Hypotheses were tested using Chi-square test analysis and McNemar’s test. The target population and the sampling population of this study were individuals over 18 years old residing in Barangay Valencia, Quezon City. The participants were above 18 years old with a salary that fit the criteria and only one participant per household was included in the study.

The participants were informed of the purpose of the study and were made aware of how the findings will be used. Participation occurred on a voluntary basis and they have the right to withdraw from the study at any time. Confidentiality and anonymity were also guaranteed, and only relevant data were obtained. McNemar’s test Chi-square test analysis (X2 = 12.22, df = 1, p = 0.000474) indicates that there is a significant relationship observed between the telemedicine use and primary method of care of the residents of Barangay Valencia, Quezon City. McNemar’s test returned the notion that the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant relationship (p-value < 0.001) with the use of telemedicine.
