Assessment of perception of medical, nursing and physical therapy student towards the use of generic and branded medicines in De La Salle Health Sciences Institute of Academic Year 2017-2018

Abstract

This study used cross-sectional design. Using stratified random sampling technique, there were 282 regular and irregular students from 1st to 4th year Doctor of Medicine program, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy were chosen. Self-administered questionnaire was used in data collection. The tool was comprised of eight (8) questions answerable by Yes or No, asking if the participants perceive generic as bio equivalent to branded medicines, if generic medicines containing the same dose as branded medicines, if generic medicine must in the same dosage as its counterpart, if generic medicines are of lower quality and cheaper than branded medicines and if branded medicines require higher safety standards than generic medicines. Data was analyzed through t-test. The results of the study found out that there was no difference in the proportion of students' perception on the bio equivalence, preparation, quality, cost, side effect and safety standards of generic and branded medicines among the difference academic program, nursing, physical therapy and medicine. There was no difference in the perception of generic and branded medicines across the different colleges regardless of their year levels.
