Abstract

The research study focused on knowledge and preventive practices of residents in Barangay Bulihan, Silang, Cavite regarding cervical cancer wherein this barangay had the highest recorded case of the said disease for the year 2015. Socio-demographic variables included were age, educational attainment, civil status, monthly family income, and family history of cervical cancer. This research utilized a correlational research design using relationship studies to investigate the relationship between the knowledge and preventive practices among 240 respondents from Barangay Bulihan, Silang, Cavite, using purposive sampling technique. A self-made questionnaire was used to obtain data needed in the study. Data gathered was treated statistically using frequency, mean, percentage, standard deviation, t-test for independent means, One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson product correlation coefficient. Based on the results, 1) majority of the respondents were 19 to 39 years old, attained high school, single with a monthly family income of Php10,000 and below and had no history of cervical cancer; 2) the respondents had a very good knowledge regarding cervical cancer; 3) the respondents less practiced the prevention measures regarding cervical cancer; 4) knowledge of the respondents regarding cervical cancer was the same regardless of their age, educational attainment, civil status, and history of cervical cancer while the knowledge of the respondents regarding cervical cancer differs by having a monthly family income of P10,000 and below and P10,001 to P40,000; 5) preventive practices of the respondents differ according to age, educational attainment, civil status, and monthly family income. However, preventive practices of the respondents are the same regardless of their history of cervical cancer; 6) there is a significant negative relationship between the knowledge and practices of the respondents regarding cervical cancer. Residents who have high knowledge have low preventive practices on cervical cancer.
