Abstract

This study employed a descriptive survey method. Out of 1,800 residents of Barangay Narra I, Old Bulihan, Silang, Cavite within a specific age group, 400 respondents were chosen as respondents using simple random sampling. A self-made questionnaire was utilized in data gathering. Frequency distribution, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test of independent means, f-test, degree of freedom and level of significance were used for data analysis. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents are 21-30 years old, female, high school graduate, unemployed, had no family history of cancer and non-smokers; 2) The respondents of Barangay Narra I, Bulihan, Silang, Cavite showed a poor knowledge about smoking as a risk factor for cancer; 3) The knowledge of the respondents differed according to age, educational attainment, employment status and smoking status. However, the respondents had the same knowledge regardless of their gender and family history of cancer; 4) There was a need for proper education about smoking as a risk factor for cancer due to the poor knowledge of respondents.
