Abstract
This study focused on assessing three (3) aspects of health care waste management in the barangay health centers: (a) the availability of resources such as the financial, human and physical resources, (b) the awareness and (c) the compliance of barangay health workers with the policies and guidelines of waste minimization, segregation, collection and storage, provided by the Department of Health in 2014. This study used a descriptive correlational research method to meet the objectives of the study. A total of 160 respondents who are the barangay health workers (volunteers), midwives, doctors or nurses from the barangay health centers participated in the study. A self-made questionnaire was used to determine the availability of resources, the level of awareness and compliance of barangay health workers to the policies and guidelines on health care waste management set by the Department of Health. The questionnaire was validated by three (3) professionals. Results showed that the barangay health centers have an average level of availability of resources needed to provide for their health care waste management. The respondents have an average level of awareness to the policies and guidelines in health care waste management. They were highly complying with the policies and guidelines on health care waste management set by the Department of Health. The level of awareness on the policies and guidelines highly contributes to the compliance of the respondents towards health care waste management. The availability of resources in the barangay health center highly contributes to the level of compliance of the respondents towards health care waste management. There is a successful health care waste management because most of the respondents have an average level of availability of resources and average level of awareness therefore is highly complying with the policies and guidelines.
