Abstract

The descriptive method of research was used in this study. Using convenience sampling technique, a total of 1,672 students were included as respondents. A self-made questionnaire was developed by the researchers and validated by experts. Statistical tools used to analyze the data were Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) via F-test, frequency, percentage, standard deviation, and T-test. Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Majority of the respondents are female students; (2) Both female and male students have the same moderate level of awareness on the four (4) programs implemented by the Environmental Management System; (3) The fourth year students have the highest level of awareness on the four (4) programs implemented by the Environmental Management System, followed by the second year students, the third year students, and the first year students. The first year students had the lowest level of awareness; (4) The College of Nursing and Midwifery students have the highest level of awareness on the four (4) programs implemented by the Environmental Management System, followed by the College of Medical Radiation Technology students, the College of Medicine students and the College of Physical Therapy students. The College of Physical Therapy students had the lowest level of awareness. The researchers concluded that the College of Physical Therapy got the least level of awareness because this was the first year that the third year students from the aforementioned college resided in the Institute. As a result, they were not yet aware of the various programs of the Environmental Management System; (5) The Waste Management Program had the highest level of awareness among the programs implemented by the Environmental Management System, followed by Pollution Control Program then the Emergency Preparedness & Response Program. The Conservation Program had the least level of awareness; (6) The students of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute have an overall moderate level of awareness on the four (4) programs implemented by the Environmental Management System; (7) Regarding the Waste Management Program, Item 2 The Institute promotes Zero Legal Violation from Ecological Solid Waste Management Act got the lowest mean score. This was followed by Item 7 The Institute promotes Clean As You Go project pioneered by the College of Medical Radiation Technology and Item 9 The used papers inside the Institute are being recycled and/or reused. In the Pollution Control Program, Item 1 Implementation of the pollution control program of DLSHSI got the lowest mean score. This was followed by Item 2 The Institute complies with the requirement of Clean Air Act and Item 6 The Institute complies with the requirement of Clean Water Act. In the Emergency Preparedness & Response Program, Item 9 “Local 500” is the hotline whom I should call when emergency arises got the lowest mean score. This was followed by the Item 8 The different assembly point located at DLSHSI in case of emergency and Item 5 The different color codes with regard to emergency cases. In the Conservation Program, Item 2 The Institute aims to achieve at least 2 percent reduction of energy consumption by the end of the year got the lowest mean score. This was followed by Item 3 The Institute practices ways of conserving electric energy and Item 9 The treated water is used in watering plants inside the Institute.
